Open discussion on the future of the region and what the study on the consequences of a premature closure of PV and TEŠ, the survey of social awareness, and the analysis of motivation for retraining employees at the Velenje Coal Mine and the Šoštanj Thermal Power Plant have shown.
The Savinjska-Šaleška Region Development Agency (RA SAŠA), which operates the SAŠA Centre for Just Transition, is organising a round table in cooperation with the trade unions of the Velenje Coal Mine and the Šoštanj Thermal Power Plant to present the results of studies and surveys conducted by RA SAŠA in cooperation with experts from various fields. The event is part of broader efforts in the region to prepare the region as fully and fairly as possible for the challenges posed by the closure of the Velenje Coal Mine and the Šoštanj Thermal Power Plant.
The event will take place on 26 May 2025, between 6 p.m. and 7.30 p.m. in the Wedding Hall of Villa Bianca in Velenje and is open to the public.
We will talk about the demographic and economic impacts of the transition to a low-carbon society, who will be most affected by the negative consequences of the transition, what the social awareness of the residents of the SAŠA region is, whether the future is optimistic, what the message of the miners is, and whether young people are interested in what is happening around them and whether they want to stay in the region after completing their education. In addition to the figures and findings presented by experts, we want to hear from the people, their questions, concerns, and visions.
That is why we have invited the following guests to participate in the round table discussion:
- anthropologist Dr. Dan Podjed,
- economist Dr. Žan Jan Oplotnik,
- geographer Dr. Jani Kozina,
- youth representative Aleša Puklič, and
- miners’ representative Rok Jovan.
The audience will have the opportunity to ask questions to the participants in the discussion.
