Did you know that every step you take towards sustainability can help preserve our planet for future generations? Sustainable tourism is not just an opportunity, but a responsibility that we all share – from destinations and providers to each individual. Participating in the Slovenia Green project and obtaining environmental certificates provides the tools, knowledge, and support to transform tourism into a sustainable success story.
What exactly is Slovenia Green?
Slovenia Green is a national certification programme designed to promote sustainable tourism development in Slovenia. It operates under the umbrella of the Green Scheme of Slovenian Tourism, which brings together destinations, providers, and other tourism stakeholders with a clear goal—to enable future generations to enjoy preserved natural beauty and cultural heritage.
What does the scheme enable?
- Tool for improvement: Helps destinations and providers assess and improve sustainable practices.
- Global standards: Uses internationally recognised criteria adapted to Slovenian specificities.
- Quality certificates: Destinations and providers included in the scheme receive prestigious labels – from bronze to platinum certificates.
The Slovenia Green scheme is more than just certification; it is a community of sustainability-oriented destinations, accommodations, restaurants, attractions, and other providers who are leading the way to the future with their operations.
Why join Slovenia Green?
Joining the Slovenia Green scheme brings a wide range of benefits:
- Improved reputation and competitiveness – Certificates identify providers as responsible and sustainability-oriented, which attracts guests who value environmentally friendly choices.
- Measurable savings – Sustainable solutions, such as reduced energy consumption and efficient waste management, lower operating costs.
- Expert support and training – Scheme members gain access to innovative tools and knowledge for process optimisation.
- Greater visibility – The Slovenia Green certificate increases the attractiveness of providers to sustainability-minded guests with higher purchasing power.
- Contribution to nature conservation – Every sustainable practice helps to conserve natural resources, promotes local development, and improves the quality of life in the community.
How does the inclusion process work?
Inclusion is carried out through a public call published by the Slovenian Tourist Board: Public Call 2025.
Signs recognised by Slovenia Green
Tourist accommodations, travel agencies, attractions, parks, beaches/swimming areas, and hospitality providers wishing to join the Slovenian Green Scheme must first obtain an internationally recognised label. The labels recognised by Slovenia Green are: EU Ecolabel, Bio Hotels, Green Globe, Green Key, Travelife for accommodation, Travelife for travel agencies and tour operators, Ecocamping, Authentic Luxury, Hostelling International Quality & Sustainability, B Corp and Good Travel Seal.
Financial Incentive
Every year, the Ministry of the Economy, Tourism, and Sport publishes a public call for proposals for the introduction of environmental and sustainability labels for providers in the hospitality and tourism sectors. Applicants can apply for co-financing for the introduction of one environmental or sustainability label.
“The green story of the Savinjska-Šaleška (SAŠA) region”
In the SAŠA region, we are proud that destinations such as Solčava, Luče, Ljubno, Rečica ob Savinji, and Velenje are included in the Slovenia Green scheme. These destinations not only offer natural beauty, but also set an example of responsible environmental management.
Our region offers numerous accommodations, such as Hiša Raduha, Camp Menina, Youth Hotel Velenje, Hotel Plesnik, and Hiša sonca Luče, which are certified by Slovenia Green Accommodation. Hiša Raduha also boasts Slovenia Green Cuisine for its culinary offerings.
The Slovenia Green Wellness Route also runs through the SAŠA region, connecting destinations focused on well-being and sustainability. Among the 5-star green experiences are Velenje Underground, Flight to the Tannery of Europe, and Secrets of Sunken Villages, which offer unique experiences related to nature and history.
Our destinations and providers prove that sustainability is not just a responsibility, but also an opportunity to create unique stories and attract guests who value a responsible attitude towards the environment.

- Reduce and separate – Reduce your consumption of unnecessary products and consistently separate your waste for easier recycling.
- Reuse – Choose items that can be reused or find creative ways to recycle used items.
Final thoughts from Urška Gaberšek, Coordinator of Slovenia Green Destination Velenje
When we joined the Slovenia Green project in Velenje in 2015, we entered the world of sustainability with courage and enthusiasm. The process was not easy, but over the years we have grown, learned, and proven that with perseverance we can push boundaries. Today, we are proud holders of a gold certificate and even more determined to create a green future together with you.
Together, we can create a sustainable and green future for the SAŠA region and the whole of Slovenia. Every step you take counts–let’s be an example and a force that will lead to a better, cleaner, and more responsible future for us and future generations.
